Indoor SPC Flooring

Stone Polymer Composite (SPC) vinyl flooring is considered to be an upgraded version vinyl flooring. SPC vinyl flooring is set apart from other types of vinyl flooring by its uniquely resilient core layer. This core is made from a combination of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers. This provides an incredibly stable base for each flooring plank. You can’t tell that is what’s inside these floors once they’re installed. The floors look like any other engineered vinyl floors, with the core completely hidden underneath.

SPC FLoor Structure

Each plank of SPC vinyl flooring is constructed with the following layers:

WEAR LAYER:

This transparent layer is at the top. It provides resistance to scratches and stains and is easy to keep clean.

VINYL LAYER:

This layer provides the decoration for the plank. Colors and patterns are printed onto the vinyl.

SPC LAYER:

This is the dense, waterproof core for the plank made of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers. It provides rigidity and stability for the plank.

BASE LAYER:

This layer is generally made from cork or EVA (ethylene and vinyl acetate) foam, which provides sound insulation and cushioning.

What’s SPC flooring?

SPC Flooring-Rigid Vinyl Plank (RVP) is an upgrade and improvement of regular Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), so also called rigid core LVT. SPC represents stone plastic composite. The main content of SPC are nano-sized calcium carbonate powder (CaCO3), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and stabilizer.

SPC flooring is considered the new generation of LVT. Surface is same as LVT, so looks exactly same. The difference is about the core-PVC middle layer. Chemically, SPC has higher PVC content and less plasticizer compare to LVP. Physically, it’s more rigid. And it has less thermal expansion, fit for area has large temperature change or very strong sun light exposure. The hard core of SPC also improve the scratch resistance during the daily use. Can load heavy stuff for long time without dent. SPC flooring is 100% waterproof, can be installed in wet areas and will never swell when exposed to water. The product does not require acclimation and can be floated over most any existing floor surface, like concrete, ceramic or existing flooring.

Is there any difference between these different names? The short answer is no, there is no difference between these names. SPC flooring, PVC flooring and Vinyl flooring are one and the same. PVC stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride and while that is the accurate definition of what vinyl flooring is made from it is hardly a description that rolls off the tongue!

Is PVC Vinyl Flooring really healthy?

PVC doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. It really depends on what raw material the manufacture use. The stabilizer may have high lead content. And popular plasticizer-phthalates, may cause cancer. A significant amount of vinyl scrap is collected and recycled. If the scrap come from unknown source, it may also have toxic element. Cheap flooring usually means unhealthy.

What we can claim is that our PVC vinyl flooring is clean and healthy, because both our raw materials and our products are thoroughly tested regularly to make sure we can continuously offer our customer healthy product. Our stabilizer is lead free. And we don’t use phthalates. No outside scrap is used.

As a packaging material, PVC helps to keep food safe and fresh during transportation and on store shelves, and it provides tamper resistant packaging for food, pharmaceuticals and other products. Because it will not rust or corrode, PVC is widely used in water pipes to deliver clean, safe-to-drink water and in sewer pipes to ensure the integrity of wastewater handling systems. PVC’s resistance to breakdown under high electrical voltage and its ability to bend without cracking make it the leading material for wire and cable insulation. PVC’s toughness and durability make it the most widely used plastic for building and construction applications such as siding, windows, roofing, fencing, decking, wall coverings, wall protection and base, and floor covering.

 

Do PVC Vinyl Flooring have any impact on indoor air quality?

Products emitting low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) should be considered when selecting interior products. Any VOCs that are emitted from floors containing vinyl are dissipated quickly through normal ventilation. Vinyl products will not adversely impact indoor air quality in normal use.

A significant indoor air quality advantage of vinyl flooring is that it is impervious to moisture, so spills will not penetrate surfaces where such moisture could lead to microbial growth. Also, a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control (August 2000) supports the use of easy-to-clean surfaces such as vinyl in healthcare settings as a way of controlling pathogens and promoting a sterile environment. This is one of several reasons why vinyl flooring is widely accepted and specified by hospital and healthcare designers.

 

How do PVC Vinyl Flooring behave in accidental fires?

PVC has excellent fire performance qualities. PVC Vinyl building products are based on a naturally fire retardant polymer, and some flexible products like vinyl flooring and carpet backing contain non-combustible additives and fillers such as calcium carbonate that further improve the fire performance of the material. PVC is one of the few materials meeting the stringent requirements of the National Electrical Code of the National Fire Protection Association for insulating electrical cords and wires and data transmission cables, even in plenum applications. In addition, floors containing vinyl meet the requirements of relevant national building codes. Carpets are required to pass the Federal Flammability test DOC FF 1-70 which ensures they will not propagate the spread of flame in the early stages of a fire.

The PVC industry and third-party organizations have conducted research on the combustion toxicity of vinyl products. The contribution of the combustion products from floors containing vinyl to the overall toxic threat of fires containing many types of combustibles is not significant. The Pittsburgh Protocol is a standard test method for evaluating the combustion toxicity of floor covering products. In this test, PVC vinyl flooring is no more toxic than when burning than red oak wood.

Fire scientists recognize that the largest hazard in a fire is carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless asphyxiant gas produced in abundance by all organic materials, natural and synthetic. The mix of gases produced when vinyl products burn is very similar to those of other common materials, including wood and fabric.

Hydrogen chloride (HCl), an irritant gas having a pungent odor, is produced when vinyl burns and is detectable in very small quantities long before it reaches a dangerous concentration. An argument can be made that HCl can act as an early warning that there is a fire, and alert occupants to evacuate. HCl is unique in that its concentration in the air decreases rapidly when it reacts with humidity and most construction surfaces, like cement block, ceiling tile and gypsum board.

 

How to maintain PVC Vinyl Flooring?

PVC vinyl flooring is popular because it is affordable but also because it is so easy to care for. Unlike hardwood flooring or cork flooring, it stands up well to water, so you can use a mop with plenty of warm, soapy water for the cleaning. Just make sure you mop up excess water afterwards.

All flooring needs to be cleaned and maintained to look good and last as long as possible. The key with PVC vinyl flooring is to get dirt, sand and debris off it. These materials are abrasive, and if you walk on them repeatedly, they will scratch, mar and dull the floor’s finish. Be careful not to use abrasive cleaners and make life easier on your flooring by adding doormats at the entrances to your home.

Sweep your floors a couple of times per week or more, depending on the level of traffic they receive. You can use a vacuum cleaner, but choose one that is made for hard flooring. It either won’t have a beater bar or will have a “Hard Floors” mode that doesn’t use the bar. A bristled, rotating bar will mar these flooring types. Once the dust is up, use a floor cleaner designed for PVC vinyl flooring and mix it with warm water. Be sure to rinse the floors well since soap residue can dull the floor’s shine. A damp mop and warm water works very well. PVC Vinyl floors should not be waxed.
